The Master Battery Chair – UPM has awarded Enrique Pérez Correa the ERMA Prize for the Best Master’s Thesis in Intelligent Energy Storage Systems
- The award recognises the Master’s Thesis entitled “Wind-Photovoltaic-Battery Hybridisation with Optimised Dispatch Based on Hourly Prices”, carried out as part of the ERMA-UPM Master’s programme under the supervision of Jon López de Maturana.

The Master Battery Chair at the Polytechnic University of Madrid has awarded the Master Battery Prize for the Best Master’s Thesis in Intelligent Energy Storage Systems for the 2024/2025 academic year to Enrique Pérez Correa, a student on the ERMA-UPM Master’s Programme in Renewable Energy and the Environment.
The award-winning thesis, entitled “Wind-Photovoltaic-Battery Hybridisation with Optimised Dispatch Based on Hourly Prices”, was supervised by Jon López de Maturana and was awarded a grade of 10 (First Class Honours).
The Monitoring Committee of the Master Battery – UPM Chair, which met on 26 May 2026, selected this Master’s thesis for its technical quality, relevance and significance to the energy sector. The project develops a proprietary tool in Python designed to optimise the sizing and operation of BESS systems, incorporating economic modelling, energy arbitrage, hourly prices and optimisation criteria.
In the Commission’s assessment, the work is of a standard very close to that of professional development or applied research, and is particularly useful for current projects involving renewable hybridisation and energy storage.
The award was presented during the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary and graduation of the 19th cohort of the ERMA-UPM Master’s programme, held on 26 June in the Assembly Hall of the Higher Technical School of Engineering and Industrial Design at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
During the ceremony, diplomas were awarded to the graduates of the 2024/2025 cohort and the academic excellence of the students was recognised. Within this framework, the Master Battery Award for the Best Master’s Thesis highlighted the technical talent, innovation and contribution of the winning project to the development of advanced energy storage solutions.
In addition to the award-winning Master’s thesis, the Committee wished to highlight the quality and significance of the other two shortlisted projects: “Development of a simulation model for the production of green ammonia using solar photovoltaic energy, supported by batteries and the electricity grid”, carried out by Ángel Ignacio Gómez Cristi and supervised by Fernando Gutiérrez Martín and Javier Espelta Prieto; and “A comparative study of different mobility solutions for light road vehicles: electric power versus 100% renewable fuel”, carried out by Álvaro Palacio Ferreiro and supervised by María Dolores Cárdenas Almena and Luis Miguel Rodríguez Antón.
The Master Battery Award forms part of the activities of the Master Battery – UPM Chair in Research into Intelligent Energy Storage Systems, established to contribute to scientific and technological development in the field of energy storage, as well as to promote work that drives research into electrochemical batteries and intelligent energy storage systems.
With this recognition, Master Battery reinforces its commitment to specialised training, the transfer of knowledge between universities and industry, and the promotion of innovative solutions for the energy transition.
